In the context of the initiatives organised to celebrate its centenary, BNL BNP Paribas Group organizes an exhibition of photography and video art entitled “the sea is my land. Artists from the Mediterranean”. The exhibition will be held in Spazio D at the MAXXI (the National Museum of the Arts of the 21st century) in Rome from 4th of July to 29th of September 2013. The primary focus of the event is the Mediterranean, envisaged not only as a geographical area but also as a crossroads connecting different civilisations. The project – conceived by BNL and curated by Francesco Bonami and Emanuela Mazzonis – brings together the workof 22 artists from 22 countries bordered by the Mediterranean Sea. The aim of “the sea is my land” is to use the universal language of images to highlight the incessant metamorphosis of the Mediterranean, an area of cultural dialogue where the impartiality of art has the power to overcome social barriers, religious pluralism and ethnic dispersion, and foster peaceful communication among all those concerned.
“The large planisphere entitled “Viaggio nei progetti”, painted by Mario Schifano, and part of BNL’s collection”, commented BNL’s Managing Director Fabio Gallia, “has been my main source of inspiration. Like the painting, at the heart of this project is the Mediterranean, which is not just a bearer of noble traditions and different cultures and civilisations, but also a fertile arena for innovation and the interpretation of the new technologies. The project “the sea is my land” draws on all of these ideas, offering a tour of the different identities that have grown around the Mediterranean area, where the BNP Paribas Group operates in most of the countries”.
